About Spall: the History of Pittsford NY's Custom Home BuilderMention the name Spall to just about anyone in the Rochester, Monroe County area and most people think of home building. That's because for more than a half a century the Spall family has been involved in the development and building of residential homes. Ted Spall, Sr. began the business in 1949. He started his career as a jeweler and opened a shop with two partners. But when the shop caught fire, he had to repair it himself. He found the building business so agreeable, that he switched professions, and soon found himself building homes. The early years of the company were similar to those experienced by most young businesses - long hours, hard work and few rewards. But Ted, Sr. was a survivor; a quiet persistent individual who kept at it. He was a man of pioneering spirit - always learning, always growing, always ready to surpass the needs of his customers. These principles learned early on would guide and maintain the business well. You can be certain that your new home will be an outstanding example of the Spall family quality and dedication. As the company grew, so did the Spall family. When he was in eighth grade Ted Spall, Jr. began to work with his father. At first it was odd jobs, then later the carpentry crew, dozer operation, junior supervisor and supervisor. While at Syracuse University he obtained his real estate license. At 21, he was the youngest real estate broker in New York State. After graduation, Ted, Jr. joined the family business full time. In 1971 he became its president. All the while Spall Homes continued to grow, eventually building in most communities in Monroe County - Greece, Chili, Gates, Churchville, Mendon, Victor, Brighton, Perinton, Fairport and Pittsford - an estimated 1,500 plus homes. Stacey Spall Smith, Ted Jr.'s daughter, joined the company full time in 1999 as a sales representative. This marked the third generation of the Spall family in the home building business.
